Shin Ramyun Review: This Ramen Will Become Your Next Favorite

So, you want to know about one of the most popular Korean brands of spicy ramen?

You've tried everything. But, still haven't found the best one yet?

Look no further.

Today, I will be introducing a review of:

Shin Ramyun (4.2oz)

Have you ever had Shin Ramyun? If so, when was the first time you ate it and what was your first impression of these noodles?

In my case, when I was a college student, my Korean friend, Jun-won, introduced these noodles to me.

When I first ate it, my initial response was...

"!!!”
"It is too spicy for me, I cannot finish it!"

I drank five glasses of water while Jun-won was as cool as a cucumber

There aren’t many spicy dishes in Japanese cuisine, and therefore, as a Japanese person, I didn't have much exposure to spicy food growing up.
The spiciest thing I have ever tasted before was shichimi togarashi (seven-flavored chili pepper), which is used as a spice flavouring in udon.
...And even that was too spicy for me.

But now, I am fine eating this instant noodle (and quite enjoy it too!).

Shin Ramyun is an instant noodle brand produced by Nongshim Co., Ltd. It was first released in 1987, and it has been popular in Korea ever since.

Included in each individual package is a soup packet (in powder form), which combines spices and beef seasoning. There are also freeze-dried shiitake mushrooms, green onions, and garlics.

The packaging’s colour is a bright red - a clear indicator telling you that these noodles are red hot spicy!

Ready...?

Each value pack comes with 4 individual packages. Perfect for sharing with the family.

Bright red packaging foreshadows your taste buds will be in for a (spicy) ride!

Easy peel packaging

Do you guys have a preference to round- or square-shaped instant noodles?

These noodles come with two bags of seasoning: a vegetable pack (toppings) and a soup pack (broth base).

Cooking Directions (from the package):

1. Prepare 550 mL (about 2 1/3 cups) of water.

2. In a small pot, bring water to a boil.

3. Add in noodles, soup base and vegetable mix (two separate packets).

4. Cook noodles for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

5. Remove from heat and serve.

ENJOY!
Now, let's take a look at the different components of these noodles.

Broth ★★★☆

First and foremost, the broth is very flavorful, rich, spicy and beefy. This soup is legitimately spicy, but pretty good (if you can stand the heat).
Then again, this is exactly what I want spicy to be.
And get this: it has a good balanced amount of spice. The spice isn't overwhelming, but enough to make you sweat and feel a little uncomfortable.

You will want to eat this spicy soup noodle everyday.
But remember this: prepare a pitcher of water on the table.

The spiciness complements the soup very well, so it is delightfully delicious.

A word of caution: These noodles may be a little too spicy for some people, if the entire seasoning packet is added during the cooking process.

You can change the level of spiciness by controlling how much of the packet of spice powder you add to the soup when you make the broth.

Noodles ★★★

Picture this: Nice, thick, chewy noodles.

The noodles taste great - it has effectively absorbed the spicy flavours of the broth. They are more substantial than other instant noodles. I feel it is little bit rubbery, but I don't mind. Quite frankly, I even quite like this texture.

Usually, cheaper instant noodles lose their texture fast, but these noodles don't. They hold up over time! Even if you are distracted and leave these noodles for a while to answer a phone call or to pour yourself another glass of water, they will not become soggy quickly.

The amount of noodles in the package contains more noodles than other instant ramen brands such as Maruchan and Top Ramen.

Overall, they have a good texture, and the taste is really great for instant noodles.

Toppings ★★★

There are tiny bits of dehydrated toppings. They are carrot, green onion, and mushroom.
Unfortunately, I feel that is not enough for a real meal.
I need more vegetables and protein in the bowl.

The noodles will seem a lot healthier and heartier when accompanied by some toppings. You can add all sorts of things to your Shin Ramyun.

Here are some recommendations...

Vegetable Options
Coriander
Green onion

Smell ★★★

It also has nice aroma that may even turn some heads in the lunch room. Smell is subjective, so heads may turn because some may find the smell a little odd. But for me, the spicy aroma is very appetizing.

Overall ★★★

Imagine eating a bowl of hot piping spicy ramen noodles in the comfort of your home on a cold winter's day. This hearty bowl of ramen will warm you right up!

I love shin ramyun it is awesome for lunch or dinner. The best toppings to have is Dietz and Watson beef n pork hot dogs. Or you can also add spam for all them protein lovers. None of those are available I usually add an egg about 2 and half minutes in of cooking to get a nice liquid gold poached egg. Some nice side dishes to eat with the shin ramyun pickled garlic, kimichi, or even olives. Also I would recommend Shin Ramyun Black for nice flavor. I’ve seen shin bowls for sale local 7-11 and Wal-Mart too. And local grocery stores like shoprite here.

    Hi Barbie,
    Thanks for your comment!
You can find these ones at your local Korean supermarket.
In Canada, I would suggest H-Mart or Hannam Supermarket.

These noodles were really spicy for me! But, I guess your tolerance to spiciness is a lot higher than mine!
